Oral and maxillofacial surgeons have a varied educational background that exposes them to all facets of medical care. Their unique training program includes comprehensive study of the human body, all surgical procedures and complete anesthesia management. During four years of residency, expertise is acquired by actually administering anesthesia during even the most complicated surgeries.
The term “oral and maxillofacial surgery” refers to a specialty practice within the broad confines of dentistry. The practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery includes the diagnosis and surgical treatment of disorders of the mouth, teeth, jaws, and facial structures. Treatment includes removal of diseased and impacted teeth, orthodontic extractions, diagnosis and care of oral infections and tumors, implants and preprosthetic surgery to improve denture fit.
In addition to these routine procedures, oral surgeons correct malformed jaws and facial bones by surgically moving the affected areas to a more esthetic and functional position. This surgery is done to correct and treat patients whose teeth and jaws cannot be corrected with orthodontic treatment alone. These procedures are also utilized to treat obstructive sleep apnea. Oral surgeons also place dental implants to replace missing teeth and support dentures. Victims of facial trauma often are treated for fractures of the upper and lower jaws, cheekbones, and orbits, and the overlying soft tissues of the face. TMJ surgery is occasionally performed on patients who are unresponsive to nonsurgical treatments.
Many of these more complex surgeries require hospitalization. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are comfortable working in the hospital and operating room settings as the residency programs are required to be hospital based to provide this type of training and experience.
